Sharing the Care - the Role of Wildlife Carers
The staff at the Australian Wildlife Health Centre play an important role in wildlife rehabilitation but they also rely on the assistance of a network of wildlife carers.
Once an animal has been treated by our veterinary staff it will often need ongoing attention which is provided by a volunteer carer.
Across Victoria, thousands of wildlife carers volunteer their time to rescue and care for injured and orphaned wildlife. This is often a 24 hour a day job which requires great skill and specialised training.
Examples of the many duties performed by carers could be: getting up every four hours in the middle of the night to feed a orphaned joey, helping a Wedge-tailed Eagle learn to fly, or braving a winter night to rescue an animal that has been hit by a car.
